APEC textual records

This series is comprised of official APEC results reports, handbooks, and ministerial joint statements; newspapers, news clippings, magazines, hand-written notes, stickers, postcards, and other materials. These materials were created, used, and saved during the APEC Leaders’ Meeting at the Museum of Anthropology in November 1997. Material generated from events such as campus and city protests that occurred because of APEC are also present in this collection. These materials include University of British Columbia (UBC) campus publications and Canadian and American newspapers and magazines; press releases from protest groups; materials on The 1997 People’s Summit on APEC, the Women’s Conference Against APEC, APEC-Alert, Democracy Street, Anti-APEC Summit, and other anti-APEC organisations; photocopies of pictures of graffiti at MOA; the Musqueam Speech that was cancelled by the Prime Minister’s Office; printouts of various web pages concerning APEC; and other materials.

Series consists of photographs of, in, and around The Museum of Anthropology during the APEC Leaders’ Meeting, including images of the APEC leaders, protesters, and the staff at MOA.

APEC audio recordings

Contains sound recordings of broadcasts from the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus radio station CITR on the day of the APEC Leaders’ Meeting at Museum of Anthropology, focusing mostly on the student protests and clashes with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP); and post-APEC interviews with 2 protestors (Jonathan Oppenheim and Victoria Scott), the Dean of Arts for UBC (Shirley Newman), and the Chief of the Musqueam Nation (Gail Sparrow).

Series consists of correspondence, interdepartmental memoranda, loan requests and commissions, exhibit receipts, exhibit proposals and forms including blank forms, policy drafts, news releases, pamphlets, minutes of committee meetings, budgets, agendas, exhibition and gallery schedules, exhibition lists, facility reports, expense claims, installation invoice, handwritten notations, photographs, and slides. These records relate to the administrative duties carried out by Carol Mayer either in relation to exhibitions or other miscellaneous events such as courses taught at Emily Carr College of Art and Design, conference planning and participation on a provincial Task Force on Museum and First Nations.

Series consists of records pertaining to sundry administrative and operational activities of the Museum of Anthropology. Records include staff retreat notes, summary of recommendations and decisions, correspondence, contracts, minutes and memoranda.

Series consists of records relating to the administrative functions of the Public Relations and Communications Office, the Museum of Anthropology, and the University of British Columbia. Includes records relating to various University of British Columbia offices and staff, Museum of Anthropology staff, and museum policies and procedures, as well as attendance figures. The series also includes records relating to the development, planning, and reporting of Public Relations and Communications Office activities, including job descriptions, activity plans, and summaries of public relations activities.

The series is divided into the following sub-series:

Administration, public relations and correspondence

Series consists of records relating to McLennan’s administrative role as a curator at the MOA, including public relations (interviews given, lectures given, publications about the museum and his work), annual reports and correspondence (inquiries from interested parties regarding certain artifacts, events, people and donations at the museum). The majority of this series presents itself in textual records, however there are also digital records included as well. There are a large number of digital images in the file ‘Photographs’ which depict various stages in the museum development of MOA, significant artists, MOA grounds and landscape, special events and visitors and milestone occasions.

Administration files

Series consists of textual records related to Dr. Halpin’s administrative activities while she was the curator of Ethnology at the Museum of Anthropology. Records include correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, applications, agendas, grants, budgets, exhibition schedules, newsletters, pamphlets and internal review reports related to museum policies and the development of the museum’s acquisition policy. There are also records related to various committees, curriculum reports, and acquisition evaluations for specific items which were considered for purchase by the museum.

Administration and Planning

Series consists of general administrative records for the Collections unit at MOA, as well as planning documents for specific MOA exhibits. Material includes correspondence, object lists, object condition reports, exhibit travel schedules, and other general collections and exhibit planning records. The series is divided into two subseries:
A. General Collections administration
B. Exhibitions.

Administration

Series consists of records relating to the general administrative activities and responsibilities of Rosa Ho in her capacity as Curator of Art and Public Programmes. Series contains correspondence, memoranda, reports, and committee records.

Additional planning committees

Series consists of documentation from two additional committees that played a role in planning the Museum of Anthropology building. Material includes correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, and other planning documents.

The series is divided into two subseries, one for each committee (the Senate Building Needs Committee and the Users`Committee).

Acquisitions Committee Records

Series contains meetings of minutes, professional guidelines, memorandum, the evaluations of individual pieces, review procedures, draft of policy regarding the loan and use of MoA artifacts and objects.

During the time that Stott was on the Acquisitions Committee, the committee's role was described as follows: "to decide in individual cases whether to accept donations of archaeological materials. The Committee is committed to the premise that all artifacts offered for donation or sale to the Museum have ultimately been looted from archaeological sites. As such activity is not condoned, the Museum will accept archaeological collections but cannot recognize any monetary value of the material in the form of tax receipts or purchase as this only fuels the market for antiquities. The Acquisitions Committee establishes the acquisition priorities for MoA as well as collections security and standards." (taken from finding aid for Stott fonds written in 1999)

Academic materials

Series consists of records pertaining to Elizabeth Johnson’s teaching activities. The records relate both to courses which Johnson taught and notes on guest lectures that Johnson gave for classes at the University of British Columbia. Records include correspondence, notes, reports, syllabi, funding applications, memoranda, bibliographies and grading sheets.
