Collection consists of Haisla cultural documentation and X̄a’islak̓ala/X̌àh̓isl̩ak̓ala (Haisla language) learning material, including sound recordings, stories, a dictionary, and lessons/workbooks. The collection has been divided into two series:

  1. Sound recordings
  2. Textual materials

Textual materials

Series consists of written X̄a’islak̓ala (Haisla language) documentation and learning materials by the Dutch linguist Hein Vink (also known as Henry Vink). These language materials consist of a dictionary, one beginner course book, and one advanced level Haisla learning course book. The series also contains written tellings of traditional Kitimat stories, as told by Jeffrey Legaic and collected by Gisele Mendel.

Sound recordings

Series consists of six sound recordings, digitized from three cassette tapes. Recorded content includes Xa'islakala vocabulary and sentence exercises, along with compiled segments of radio reports and interviews regarding events in and around Kitimat in the 1970s and early 1980s. Recorded language materials are intended to be used as supplementary to the textual course materials.

Second segment contains longer X̄a’islak̓ala sentences, initially provided in English and translated into X̄a’islak̓ala.

John Baldwin's Fall, July 1, 1977 - Dirk + Grizzly, Nov. 11, 1980 - Heavy Snow Fall, Skeena + Nass

The first segment is a compilation of radio reports and interviews about John Baldwin's hiking accident and subsequent rescue on Hudson Bay Mountain. John Baldwin was a friend of Dirk, Gisela Mendel's son.

The second segment is a radio report and interview about Dirk Mendel's encounter with a grizzly bear while on a hiking trip.

The third segment is a radio weather report about a heavy snow fall in Kitimat, Terrace, Burns Lake, and the surrounding areas. The segment also contains an interview about the snowfall with Nisga'a band councillor Chester Moore.

First Course in Haisla
