Item is an audio recording of a lecture given by Wilson Duff on “Women and Bears.” Duff uses the story of the woman who married a bear, represented in a Haida sculpture, to frame a discussion of the disenfranchisement of First Nations women under the Indian Act, the Lavell case (AG v. Lavell, 1971) and the Bedard case (R v. Bedard, 1973), and Haida and Nisga’a art. Lecture is recorded on both Side A and Side B.

Subseries consists of research material created by Sawyer, as well as his students, regarding Northwest coast artifacts. The majority of this research pertains to a specific type of artifact known as the “Jenna Cass” mask. This portrait mask was created by the Haida First Nations, and is known for its colouring and pronounced lebret piercing. Textual materials in this subseries include reports, iconic analysis, handwritten notes, memos, correspondence, and photocopies of articles related to Jenna Cass and other artifacts research. Graphic materials include photographs, slides, film negatives, and drawings of Jenna Cass masks. Other materials not related to the Jenna Cass research include photocopies of published articles related to Northwest coast artifacts.

Item is an audio recording of an interview with Percy Brown, a Haida Elder and well-known singer, about birds, animals, fish, whaling and trapping terminology on Haida Gwaii, British Columbia. He is interviewed by two unidentified women. In the first half of the recording, he is asked questions about local birds, for example, partridges, puffins and sea gull, in order to determine Haida names for the birds and to determine if the birds are native to Haida Gwaii. He is asked similar questions about various types of vegetation, for example, plant roots. He also provides information about historic uses of trading and trapping in Haida Gwaii.
