History
Although NEC (formerly Native Education Centre) had existed since 1967, it was in 1979 that the society was formed to assume control and broaden the scope of education to include academic post-secondary courses. The school moved into its current facilities in 1985, a building featuring architectural features of a traditional Pacific Coast longhouse.

Legal status
The NEC Native Education College is a non-profit society that is governed by Board of Directors who are elected from the society’s members. The society is currently made up of over 30 community leaders from many different nations.
Functions, occupations and activities
NEC exists to support Aboriginal learners and has identified a mission statement, results and goals to guide its operations. The philosophy of the NEC Native Education College Society is founded on the principles upheld by the Elders of our respective nations. The values of our people are contained in the teachings of our Elders – to protect our spirituality, our culture and our land. We will uphold these ideals; live them to the best of our abilities.
