John Mennie fonds

Fonds consists of various photographic materials and a small number of textual records. Glass plate negatives document totem poles, house fronts, street scenes, church groups, school groups, weddings, the local store and maritime subjects in Alert Bay. Textual records include a Christmas card from Alert Bay Radio and two small pamphlets of photography instructions printed by "J. Mennie, Developing & Printing Service." The oldest negative dates from 1862, though the identity of its photographer is unknown.

John Williams collection

Collection consists of one leatherbound book which reads “The Camden”…“presented by Francis Westley to the Rev. John Williams” from circa 1838 with signatures of people who attended Williams’ fundraising talks for the Polynesian mission on the Camden. In addition, there are five letters from 1837 and six contemporary photographs of the book, pages of signatures within the book, and the letters.

James Albert Gibson fonds

Fonds includes 20 audio reels used to record speakers of the Secwepemc language of Secwepemctsin. Gibson created the recordings while conducting research for his dissertation, “Shuswap Grammatical Structure” (1973). Other materials include a copy of a photograph of Gibson with two of his informants, and a copy of his obituary.

Fonds consists of an album given to Mary Tucker by her grandfather who had received it in the early 1900s as a gift from the Japanese Diet. The album consists of a series of hand-tinted silk screen reproductions depicting a variety of Japanese scenes and landmarks. Each individual silk screen is labeled with the subject of the image. The covers of the album are black lacquer with a floral image in gold on the back cover and a scene in relief of a woman and a boy sweeping on the front cover.

Thomas and Mildred Laurie collection

The collection includes material relating to Alert Bay that was created or collected by Thomas and Mildred Laurie, as well as photographs and textual records created or received by James Barclay Williams, who bequeathed the records to Mildred Laurie. The collection includes a photo album, photographs, postcards, correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and a calendar. Photographs document Alert Bay and the surrounding area, including the B.C. Packers store, Christ Church, the native cemetery, St. Michael’s Residential School and Preventorium, Canada Packers, Hardy Bay, totem poles, a long house, and the Nimpkish Hotel. Photographs also document local events, including potlatches, weddings, an outdoor salmon barbeque, BC centenary celebrations in 1958, native ceremonies, and a visit by the Governor General.

Hindaleah (Hindy) Ratner fonds

The fonds consists of records created by Ratner in the process of conceptualizing, developing and running public programming and extension services. Initially, the duties of the Extension Curator were coordinating the development of in-house exhibits, non-credit educational programming, extension activities and publicity. Programming included performances, workshops, lectures, non-credit courses, museum tours, identification clinics
and audio-visual presentations, often in conjunction with the Center for Continuing Education. Ratner organized local and international cultural excursions, including acting as a tour escort. Ratner was responsible for coordinating special events and lectures in conjunction with exhibits, and from 1980 was responsible for administering travelling exhibitions. Other extension activities included print exhibits in Vancouver office spaces, installations in off-campus locations such as the Vancouver Airport, and the Special Prison Extension Project.
Communications duties included production of the calendar of events and publicity circulars. Other duties included preparation of grant applications, managing staff, including student interns, budgeting, preparing reports, and assisting film and video production use of museum space and collections.
Public relations activities included establishing contacts with media representatives, promoting exhibits and other special events, producing news releases, distributing calendars of events and brochures, arranging staff interviews with media and soliciting publicity.

Fonds consists of photographic prints and text labels used in the “Emergence from the Shadow: First Peoples’ Photographic Perspective” exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, from October 22, 1999 to January 6, 2002. The images depict several different First Nations groups including Haida, Kimsquit, Bella Coola, Ulkatcho-Carrier, Chilcotin, Assiniboine, and Gitksan. The label text incorporates information which Smith recorded at the time of creation. It gives name and age (if known) of the sitters as well as lineage, employment, and style of dress.

Lorna R. Marsden fonds

The fonds consists of digitized photographs and slides taken by Lorna R. Marsden during her visit to northern Ethiopia in the late fall, winter, and spring of 1971-1972. Marsden traveled from Addis Ababa to Debre Libanos, Debre Markos, Bahar Dar, Gondar, Lalibela, Mekele, and Aksum. On this trip, Marsden purchased several objects, thirteen of which she later donated to the Museum of Anthropology in 2016. Photographs include images of buildings, landscapes, and cityscapes, historic and tourist sites, celebrations, marketplaces, objects and goods, scenes from everyday life in urban and rural northern Ethiopia, as well as other images related to or giving context to the donated objects. The photographs also show Marsden at historic sites and other locations in northern Ethiopia, with Ethiopian locals and her travelling companions, and with some of the donated objects.
